Upper Ocean Structure Determines the Contrasting Typhoon‐Induced Chlorophyll‐a Responses in the Northwest Pacific

The frequent typhoons in the northwest Pacific drive oceanic responses, for example, changes sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). A composite analysis shows that SST (Chl-a) around typhoon center decreases (increases). begins to decrease 3 days before typhoon’s arrival further until 2 following passage. Chl-a increases rapidly after arrival, maximum value is reached typhoon. Large responses are often associated with have high wind speeds slow translation speeds. From perspective of upper ocean structure, increasing identified a shallower pre-typhoon mixed layer depth (MLD). However, significant dependence response on MLD emerges only when typhoon-induced mixing greater than MLD. This study helps quantitatively describe consideration determinant environment.
